A tiny bit of trash to treasure

Couple things I came across today...

I needed some superglue to fix a RL item so found a small four-pack from Dollarama. Unfortunately, it had pretty much dried out so couldn't use it.  BUT the caps which are 5/8" tall will work for drinking glasses or, perhaps, vases.

I just had central air conditioning installed in my condo and this is a little plastic piece that I found after the installer left. As is, it's about 1/2" tall and almost 3/4" wide across the top. I could trim off the excess around the top to make a glass...or I could leave it "as is" and have a vase that could work in either 1:12 or 1:24.

I have dry eyes so I use a lot of Systane eyedrops. If I push out the drop delivery part (centre picture)and trim it off, I end up with a great little funnel in 1:12 scale!

Love it when I find these treasures.

Furniture for the nursery

Erika dropped off the nursery furniture I bought from her almost two weeks ago but life has interfered with working on the roombox. I've got several other RL projects that I'm picking away at right now so minis are taking a back seat.

Beautiful canopy crib and cabinet

Will definitely be using both these. The two back legs on the crib have broken off but will be easy to repair.
Table, change table/chest of drawers and high chair

Table is good. Think I'll pad the top of the chest of drawers so it can be used as a change table. I like the high chair but can't see it in the room.

Metal dollhouse, cradle with doll and rocking horse

Have to have a dollhouse! I like the cradle but don't think I'll use it although I think I'll move the bbaby to the crib. Love the rocking horse.

filled cabinet

I like a lot of the contents on the shelves but would prefer to stick with the white furniture.

Rocking chair from my stash

EXCEPT for the rocking chair. I actually have a white one but Grandma Marie had a dark brown one when she had James so brown it will be.

Have to go through my stash  and see what accessories I can find. Already found a pink teddy bear.

But first thing I have to do is fix the gaps between the crown molding and the ceiling.....

The crown molding gap

Thanks to Jodi and Sheila, I have some really great advice on how to fix the crown molding. Thank you, ladies, for that. Well needed advice and I will take it.

However, I have some thoughts of my own.

First of all, I should have painted the top of the crown molding so the difference between the ceiling and the crown molding wasn't quite so evident.

Secondly, I should have taken Brooke Tucker's advice and put dots of superglue across the molding to keep it in place while the tacky glue dried.

I think if I had done both those things, I wouldn't have the gap.

But, who knows?

So those are just thoughts that might help you in the future.

Nursery roombox finished and ready to furnish!

It's been a LONG time since I added crown molding to a room and I was more than a bit apprehensive as my strip of wood was 36" and I needed 35 3/4" of molding to go around the ceiling. Had a couple short pieces left over from a previous project so I could piece in any shortages if necessary but really didn't want to do that.

I cut the back piece. It fit perfectly and the mitres were right. Marked the mitre cut on the first side piece, cut the first couple strokes and it just didn't seem right so decided to leave it for the time being. That was for the best as the cut would have been all wrong.

So this afternoon, I spent quite some time re-figuring the angles and finally got them right! Painted them to match the ceiling and glued them in place.

Wish I had had some clamps to glue them a bit tighter to the ceiling.

But at least the roombox is finished and now I have the joy of filling it.

I'm sorry but I really dislike building a house (only have done two so far) or preparing a roombox for its contents. I get my joy from filling rooms and making them speak to me or the person(s) I'm giving them to.

On Wednesday, Erika is bringing over the nursery furniture I bought from her at the M.E.E. club garage sale.

Then I can begin....YIPPEE! Her room; some of my furniture; my stash (and Barb's); family pictures and memories!

This is going to be wonderful!

Nursery floor

Day before yesterday, I went upstairs to visit with my friend and fellow miniaturist Barb. Among other things, we talked about the nursery. Then yesterday morning, there was a square of carpet tile slipped under my door with a note from Barb suggesting that it might work for the nursery.

Well, it was perfect! So I took it back to Barb and told her it was perfect but there wasn't enough 😞.

And she tells me that she has another one and I can have them!! She only asked that I return any that I didn't use.

I take them home and finish the floor.

Then I take the leftover pieces back to her, along with some similarly coloured pieces that I thought she might be be able to use when she starts her next project so she knows where she can find them if she needs them.

What a blessing it is to have friends who share your interests and often share things from their stashes.

The nursery

Well, I painted the rest of the roombox white, including the inside roof.

Tonight I painted the three walls in a pale pink. Took a white paint that Bev had also given me and added a small amount of the pink that she had given me. (Marie found out the colour from James.)

I'm not pleased with where the upper ceiling meets the walls. Guess I will have to put in some crown molding.

The actual carpet that I had had too many orange tones in it so I looked around and found this lovely piece of rose velvet in my fabric stash. This is going to be a problem as it has so much give to it. I will have to cut a piece of cardboard to fit the floor then figure out how to attach the fabric to it. Ordinarily I would use an iron-on fusible interfacing but I'm a bit concerned about using that with velvet. The other option is double-sided carpet tape but that would be really hard to work with.

Or maybe a spray adhesive?

Have to give some thought to that....

A new nursery

I had really hoped that the china shop and the gifts from DS Marie would get my get up and go going but, alas, that didn't happen.

However, Marie's second son and his beautiful wife, Aaryn, are expecting a baby girl in the fall and they plan on naming her Grace after our mother. (Cue tears.)

Of course, my immediate thought is that I have to make them a roombox to commemorate the occasion.

But I no longer have any nursery furniture in my stash! I contemplated sending out an email to our club members asking if anyone could help me out then decided I would wait until after our club's online garage sale and see what was available then. M.E.E. traditionally has a garage sale in June where members can sell items they no longer need that they think other club members might want.

WOW! The 19th item at the garage sale was a complete nursery! And it was mostly white with pink accents! And so inexpensive I almost feel guilty about it. Emailed the seller then waited with bated breath - and I got it.

I bought it from Erika B. who is taking over my position of managing the sale part of our Show and Sale so I have to get a lot of paperwork done for her then she will come out and deliver the pieces and I will give her the S&S paperwork.

In the meantime, I have started the work on the roombox itself.

About 25 years ago, M.E.E. commissioned the building of several roomboxes. I don't know who built them but they are wonderful. Outer measurements are 16" wide x 10" high x 11" deep. The occasional one has a plexiglass ceiling but most just have a plexiglass front. I buy them every time I can find one. They are just the right size for almost every room. I have two right now and am using one of those for this nursery.

I've given the outside of the roombox the first coat of paint.

I know that James has painted the walls a pale pink so I'm thinking that maybe I can tone this down with white to paint the walls.
I do have some wonderful pale pink paper that might work on the walls. (Can't get a decent picture so am not going to show it to you.)

Have some "pinkish" carpet but am going to exclude it as it just doesn't work for me.

Back to the drawing board for that,

My friend Barb R. stopped by with a few things she thought I could add to the room.
And I had picked out these things from my stash.

So I guess at this point, I will get the painting done then wait to get the furnishings from Erika.
